Belladonna is a wonderful acute remedy often used for complaints with sudden onset. An example would be a high fever that seems to come out of nowhere. A person with a belladonna fever would probably radiate heat and have dilated pupils and a red face. You don't even have to touch them to feel the heat coming off. Pains are intense and might be throbbing, burning, or stabbing. There might be agitation and inability to sit still.
We think of belladonna as the chronic for calcarea carbonica. This means that a person who does well with calc carb is likely to do well with belladonna in an acute situation because they work well together. That does not mean it is the only helpful acute for calc carb, nor does it mean that belladonna is only good for a calc carb constitution. It does mean it is one of the first remedies to consider if a calc carb develops an acute.
It is lesser known as a constitutional remedy, but it is useful for that as well. A constitutional belladonna is very intense and often finds themselves the center of attention, despite the fact that they may often prefer to avoid it. They may be quite irritable and seem to explode out of nowhere with growling and swearing. Belladonnas are hard to ignore as they are also very loud. They may have trouble sleeping and moan while tossing and turning. A belladonna person in a healthy state has a great deal of vitality and energy.
One of my first experiences with homeopathy was with my oldest child. She had a bright red, rather large swelling on her leg, which radiated heat. As I knew nothing about homeopathy yet, I asked a friend who suggested belladonna. One dose of 30C and I watched the swelling shrink over the course of the next 12 hours until it was completely gone. It never returned.
